This season, MidiUmi has created two types of outerwear made with down.
The down used is upcycled down
Upcycling is the process of using technology and design to revive unwanted or old items into new products and increase their value.
We often hear about reduce, reuse, and recycle, but upcycling may be a little less familiar.
The fashion industry is said to be an industry that has a high impact on global environmental pollution.
Due to the influence of the fast fashion trend, the annual consumption of clothing is increasing year by year, and accordingly, the amount of clothing discarded per person is also increasing.
Other issues that are being raised include the polluted water and greenhouse gases produced during the clothing manufacturing process, as well as the use of animal hair and skin in clothing.
As a part of the fashion industry, MidiUmi is committed to thinking and acting with common sense towards the things and environment that surround us.
The use of upcycled down is part of this initiative.
Feathers are a durable natural material, and with proper care, they can last up to 100 years.
However, most clothing and bedding made with feathers are disposed of when they are no longer needed.
On the other hand, feather production is declining.
Upcycled down is the process of rescuing such feathers from being disposed of as unwanted material and regenerating them so that they can be used for as long as possible.
By the way, until you can upcycle down
①Purchase unwanted down comforters from local governments and public organizations
② Dismantle the futon and remove broken feathers and foreign objects.
3. Wash, rinse and dry the removed feathers at high temperature
④Quality inspection of mixing ratio, cleanliness, etc.
After going through the above process, the upcycled item is complete.
Using upcycled down means treating natural resources with care and reducing the amount of unnecessary material that is incinerated, which leads to reduced CO2 emissions and a lighter burden on the environment.
The impact of our efforts is still small.
However, if we do nothing, nothing will change.
We will continue to think about and act on how we can contribute to society.
Start with small things and work your way up.
Someone said these words. They are wonderful words when you look at them head on.
