Finlayson Exhibition: Celebrating 200 Years of Business - Textiles that have been loved in Finnish life

Finlayson is Finland's oldest textile brand, specialising in the design and production of bedding and other products.

Since its founding in 1820, the company has gained popularity in Japan for its high-quality products and stylish designs, focusing on bedding and home textiles.

Many people have probably seen "Elephanti," a row of statues.

Finlayson's history began in 1820 when Scottish man James Finlayson founded a cotton mill in Tampere, Finland's second largest city.

In 1825 it became the largest spinning mill in Finland, employing half the population of Tampere.

In fact, it was the first company in Finland to employ women, contributing to the advancement of women in society.

In the 1930s, PMK, a sales company for Finnish cotton mills, was founded and entered the textile industry.

PMK's advertising campaigns have since been seen in magazines, shop windows and various other places.

After that, a design atelier was established in 1951, and in-house designers were hired. The golden age of textile design began in the 1960s.

Since establishing an in-house design atelier, the company has employed in-house designers such as Aini Valli, who have produced a succession of works that have become the core of Finnish design, which is steeped in symbiosis with nature, such as colorful floral motifs and bold graphic patterns.

And speaking of Finland, Moomin is famous. Finlayson is the only company that has been granted permission by the creator, Tove Jansson, to produce Moomin-patterned fabrics! This is proof that Finlayson is rooted in the local community and is trusted.

This exhibition, planned to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Finlayson's founding, will be the first to be shown in Japan to the public for the first time valuable materials from that time stored at the Tampere History Museum, as well as to introduce the colorful original design drawings and textiles stored at Forssa Museum in the town where the factory was also located.

Enjoy the history of Finlayson, a brand that has been loved and trusted by Finnish homes for 200 years.
